NIE number

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a unique identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain for legal, administrative, and financial purposes. It is not a residence permit or ID card, but simply a personal number that remains the same for life and is used by Spanish authorities to identify you in all official procedures. The NIE is issued on an official A4 paper certificate that contains your number, personal details, and a stamp from the authorities.

You will need an NIE if you plan to:
  • buy or register a car
  • open a bank account
  • sign a rental contract
  • work or start a business
  • pay taxes or deal with authorities

Documents required for NIE:
  • valid passport (original + copy)
  • completed application form (EX-15)
  • proof of reason for applying (e.g. property purchase, job, etc.)
  • appointment confirmation (cita previa)
  • payment of government fee (Modelo 790)
