EU Registration Certificate (Green NIE) in SpainThe EU Registration Certificate, commonly known as the “green NIE”, is an official document for EU citizens who plan to live in Spain for more than 3 months. It confirms your legal residence in Spain and registers you as a resident with the Spanish authorities.
This certificate includes your personal details and NIE number and serves as proof that you are officially living in Spain under EU regulations. It is required for many long-term administrative procedures and for accessing services as a resident.
The document is issued as a small green paper certificate (not a plastic card) and is usually provided on the day of your appointment, once all requirements are met.
Who needs the Green NIE?You need this certificate if you:
- are an EU citizen and plan to stay in Spain longer than 3 months
- live, work or study in Spain
- want to access services as a resident
Documents required:- valid passport or ID + copy
- NIE number
- completed application form (EX-18)
- payment of government fee (Modelo 790)
- proof of income, work or sufficient funds
- health insurance (if applicable)
- appointment at the police station (cita previa)
