Driving License Exchange in Spain

Driving license exchange allows you to convert your foreign driving license into a Spanish one. This is often required if you become a resident in Spain or if your current license is not valid for long-term use. The process depends on your country of origin and whether Spain has an agreement with that country.

Who needs to exchange their license?
You may need to exchange your driving license if you:
  • become a resident in Spain
  • have a non-EU driving license
  • want to drive legally long-term in Spain
  • need a Spanish license for administrative or legal purposes

*EU license holders can usually continue using their license while it is valid, but in some cases registration or exchange may be required.

How long can you use a foreign driving license in Spain?
The rules depend on your nationality and the type of driving license you hold.
  • EU / EEA licenses: You can generally use your license in Spain as long as it remains valid. In some cases, registration or exchange may be required — for example, if your license has no expiry date, if it is about to expire, or after becoming a long-term resident.
  • Non-EU licenses with exchange agreements (e.g. UK and certain countries): You can usually drive with your original license for up to 6 months after obtaining residency in Spain. After this period, you must exchange your license for a Spanish one.
  • Non-EU licenses without agreements: You may only use your license for a limited time, and then you will need to pass the full Spanish driving exams (theory and practical) to obtain a Spanish license.

Documents required:
Requirements may vary depending on your country, but usually include:
  • valid passport or ID
  • your current driving license

  • medical certificate (psychotechnical test)

  • application form and payment of fees
